3x3 Journaling Builds InsightHave you ever thought you needed a body double so you could get everything done? Maybe your thoughts and actions are too scattered. Starting a journal may help. Journaling builds insight and mindfulness. This simple tool is highly productive, only requiring paper and a pen. You will deepen your connection with what is most important to you when writing your thoughts on paper. You may find it easier to think about strategies, visualize a solution and create new pathways for creative thinking.

Sometimes the process of slowing down to reflect and review your thoughts results in a deeper capacity for innovation and more forward thinking. A person’s mind can have up to 60,000 thoughts during the day. Mobile devices push us to make even more teeny-tiny decisions each hour. When writing, most people can only process about one hundred words per minute, so any thoughts recorded on paper have a higher percentage of “sticking” or being remembered.

Journaling can be free form; it can be doodles that mean something to you or your thoughts can be directed toward a particular problem or challenge. Some people carry a journal with them at all times and jot down inspiring ideas as they pop up during the day. Others may end the day with 10 minutes of quiet, introspective thoughts. There is no wrong or right way; each person is unique. The primary challenge for many individuals is to be consistent. Giving yourself permission to take 5-30 minutes to sit quietly and put your thoughts in order sounds like a huge chunk of time for many, but when compared to the 24 hours given to us each day, it isn’t that much time at all!

Journaling builds insight into why you act the way you do and can aid you in changing your perspective on people around you, your job and your life goals. Journaling builds mindfulness as you delve into the emotional side of your life and then look at your problems more objectively to make proactive, intentional actions that will make your life better.

Go ahead; purchase a small spiral notebook or a fancy leather bound book. Both will work just fine. Put that pen or pencil to paper & give yourself a chance. Let journaling build your insight and mindfulness!

Use Imagination to Create a New Reality

Your imagination can create a new reality! Now….what you say to yourself on a daily basis? Do you replay old memories of failed attempts in your imagination? Maybe it is time to use your imagination to change negative internal stories to more realistic commentary.

I did not come from an affluent family. My siblings and I often wore hand-me-down clothes, purchased second-hand cars and added water to the ketchup bottle to make it last longer! That is not to say that we were poor. Each of us had chores to do around the house and were given an allowance for completed work. We all held part-time jobs to help pay for a car, fill up the tank with gas, cover our personal spending and assist with the cost of college tuition.

We learned that completing work on time paid off. Diligence and a job well done gives a sense of accomplishment and helped me develop a skill set for achieving bolder dreams.

Review how you look at yourself and how you speak about your life. If you often say, “I really wanted to do this (fill in the blank) ______ but never did,” be curious. Curious about why you haven’t achieved those dreams that are still embedded in your soul. You still have the ability to visualize and change your internal story. Redirecting your energy will benefit your life.

Here’s an example: When I first moved to Los Angeles, I lived with family and friends as I got established. It’s expensive to buy property in LA, so I was pleased when I found a boat to call home in Marina del Rey.

One day, I was walking with a friend who kept making remarks about “those rich people who own boats.” She could not imagine what type of people would have so much money that they would buy a boat or a yacht. I told her, “People like me!” She laughed and thought I was joking. Later, as I sat on the dock of my “home,” I realized that even though we were walking side-by-side, looking at the same landscape, we were miles apart in our mindset. She saw the boats as ridiculously expensive playthings for rich people and I saw them as a fabulous alternative to LA’s high rent and taxes.

Review yourself again and expand your sense of worth. Stop all the old useless comments and memories of who you were. Consciously choose to trust yourself, leave old guilt behind, and celebrate small successes. Move confidently toward your new path and start being aware of how abundant life can be.

When you begin to look for abundance, you will be amazed at the results: mental strength from your proactive choices, gratefulness for the fullness of life, and unexpected places to find good fortune. I challenge you to look for money over the next three days. I bet you will find money lying in the street – just waiting for you to pick it up.

INVESTING IN VALUE = Long Term Success

When you have something of value: family, friends, possessions – you want to take care of them, and maintain your investment. Many people are financial quick-fixers with a duct tape mentality, and contrary to popular belief, duct tape doesn’t fix everything. They may get immediate results, but are not actually dealing with the cause of their problem. This can result in complicated or frustrating long-term results.

If you are overdrawn in your bank account, you might think you are doing right by using your credit card to bring your account back into balance. That is robbing Peter to pay Paul. The reality is that you are creating more debt for yourself and adding interest payments to what you owe already.

I joke that I wish I could “un-know” what I know. It is a lot more work when you start to take responsibility for your life. Imagine going to a seminar and hearing that there are eight steps you have to take in order to become a millionaire. Many people in the seminar will stop at four steps and say, “I’ve finished four steps, why don’t I have 500,000 dollars?”

We live in a volatile world. Instead of being a financial quick-fixer, take a longer view into the future, make value-based choices and begin to create a healthy and abundant lifestyle over time.

  • Figure out where you are: Take a look at your spending habits and write down every purchase in a month. Will you be happy with that choice in five years?
  • Identify your priorities: How can you reallocate funds to support your priorities and provide additional value in your life? What really matters to you?
  • Create a financial support system: Actively seek support utilizing professional advice, friends, financial tools, software and applications to set your self up for success.

Once you learn to work with your list of financial goals and stop operating out of fear regarding money, you will see your efforts transfer to other aspects of your life. You may feel more financially confident once you have a clear vision of where you are and where you want to be.

Empowering yourself financially allows you to toss out old reactions and habits. You choose your actions! As you tap into your own power, you no longer wait for luck to happen or hope that you win the lottery—you actively take charge of your life. I call this positive lifestyle where the riches of life are inherent in your soul—proactive abundance!

Setting Your Priorities

Shift in Perspective

Re-evaluating what is most important can be life changing. Studies have proven that effective goal setting can bring about significant change in a person’s thought actions and lifestyle.

Sometimes people procrastinate because the task seems to big to handle. Some folks concentrate on tiny meaningless decisions that don’t make an impact on critical choices. Some people think there just isn’t enough time, but in creating a slight mental shift, time and desire can redirect your time, efforts and concentration to become more productive in your choices.

One of the benefits you may have as you make progress in one or two areas — you may find that your renewed focus and energy manifest positive changes in other aspects of your life as well. Setting goals is an excellent way to discover your true internal beliefs and take actions that are true to the “real” you. You can learn to create balance and success in both your personal and professional live.

While it may feel overwhelming, stating intentions and setting goals can be broken down into a few easy steps.

  • Step 1: Write down all of your goals for the next 2-5 years. Rank them by what you desire most and then make a side note determining if the goals are easy or difficult. Breaking the bigger, more challenging goals into smaller “chapters” gives you the ability to work out a solution over time.
  • Step 2: Realize you can’t make massive changes in every area of your life at the same time. Pick three main goals to begin with and stay focused on those first.
  • Step 3: Write down your goals and start a journal to review your thoughts, write yourself notes or log inspirational quotes or ideas to keep you going. You may find the goal evolves with time, producing better results.
  • Step 4: Reward yourself for success. Many “pint-sized” steps can culminate in achieving substantial results. Take time to recognize small victories and “treat” yourself with a little reward.

Life is a series of snapshots and moments that create the wholeness and beauty of our lives – rejoice in it!

Getting ready to buy a house? While it is always important to set intentions and visualize your goal, nothing will happen until you take action and get some momentum flowing. I always wanted to play basketball but sleeping with a basketball under my pillow and wearing shorts and a jersey with a number on it, will not make me a player! To play the game, I have to learn the rules, dribble a ball and practice making a basket. These actions will get me much closer to my goal.

Keep that in mind when your goal seems to be “just out of reach.” Implementing proactive plans and following up with the best action will always take you many steps closer toward the prize!

Visualize Abundance

Visualize success. Professor of Psychology Dr. Robert Rosenthal has studied the effect of self-fulfilling prophecies for more than 50 years, researching nonverbal responses between people, studying behaviors that change based on how teachers view students, and documenting lab animals rising to researcher’s expectations.

His findings? An encouraging attitude can cause people to rise up to another person’s higher level of expectation.

Let’s apply that on a personal level. How often do we create negative expectations in our mind – then when things go exactly as we feared, we feel validated that we were right? For example, imagine you are walking along a sidewalk and a group of teenage boys approaches you. The four young men are laughing and talking, but you feel they will ignore you and force you to step off the sidewalk as they pass by. And they probably will – based on your expectation and body cues. On the other hand, you may decide to greet them and smile, expecting they will shift to one side of the sidewalk, and again, you are right – it’s a friendly encounter as you pass by.

If visualizing a scenario in advance can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, let’s start using positive visualization to make our lives more abundant each and every day!

Buddha stated more than 2500 years ago: “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.”

Set your intentions and visualize your future by writing down and verbalizing daily affirmations like, “I deserve the abundance in life,” or “Today I will be open to new possibilities and take action.” By creating a state of spiritual abundance, you open yourself up to the generous flow of life and embrace all possibilities that come your way.

Beginning with the end in mind means getting in touch with your deepest core values and clearly visualizing what you want.

Let’s apply visualization to our financial life: Are you where you want to be financially? To make a financial shift, you will need to open your mind to change and new possibilities. Once you determine what goals you would like to achieve, planning the next steps is key to success.

I believe that one of the most important ways to bring about change is through visualization. This technique involves envisioning your future with a new perspective (rather than as an extension of your current reality). You may see yourself with an abundance of money or paid up on all your credit card debt or driving a new car. If you can’t visualize how your future could be, it is difficult to believe you can take the necessary steps to get there.

Many people say that you only need to believe in something to make it come true. Here is something that should come as no secret to most of you: success requires consistent effort.

Yes, I believe that it is important to visualize your future in order to make changes. However, if your reality keeps reflecting something different than what you envision, you may need to put in a few more hours or revise your strategy.

Envision what you want, tell yourself it can happen and draft a plan. Here’s a great example:

Sam, a client of mine, had always wanted to own his own business. He didn’t have specific details; he just knew he had a dream. Sam worked in a business park and there was no convenient place for a quick lunch. Each day, he’d come to work and think, “This place needs a sandwich shop.” He realized there might be an opportunity to open his own business and began to envision the details of his dream.

He made some plans and worked out all of the financial details for his own sandwich shop. He would offer a limited variety of Panini sandwiches (two types of cheese, two types of meat), canned soda or bottled water, and two types of chips. He determined that meal prices at ten dollars or less would attract lunch customers. He decided to lease four Panini machines for the first six months (rather than purchase them) in case the restaurant didn’t work out.

He needed a certain amount saved up before launching his plan. If the business took off in six months, he would continue building his sandwich shop business. If not, he would be able to get out without long-term debt. His exit strategy was in place. He saw a need and envisioned himself filling it. To his credit, Sam now owns a thriving sandwich shop.
