Tips to prepare for your scheduled online recording

Selecting the Device to Record Online

We are currently using Riverside.fm to record both audio AND video for our podcast. We will also release both audio and video of our show.

To achieve the best recording quality you will need:

  • a webcam
  • external microphone
  • & headphones

We are very strict with this requirement. We want to you sound the the very best. One of the biggest reasons for a listener to drop off listening to podcast is poor sound quality. So please do your best to be prepared.

Here are some tips for a seamless recording experience:

Desktop and Laptop Computers:

Riverside.fm currently supports desktops, laptops, and Microsoft Surface devices using the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser.

Mobile Devices: Riverside iOS or Android app

Download the Riverside iOS app for iPhones and iPads with iOS 14.0 or later.

Download the Riverside Android app for Android devices with Android 5.0 or later.

Chromebooks and other tablets are not yet supported.

Check your internet & browser data storage

Recommended Internet Speed

Recording with Riverside is optimized for all internet speeds, although we recommend using a connection with an upload speed faster than 5 Mbps. We also recommend if using desktop or laptop to connect via ethernet rather than wi-fi to avoid signal drop outs.
TIP: Test your internet speed here

Recommended Device Storage

We recommend having at least 5 GB of free space available on your device to store your locally-recorded, separated track in your temporary files as it uploads.
TIP: Check how much storage space your browser can access.

Connecting with Bob on Riverside.fm

A link to connect on Riverside will be emailed to you approximately 2-3  days prior to your scheduled recording time. If you are unable to see it in your inbox, please check your spam or junk folder.

Before you begin, close all other applications that don’t need to be open during the recording. This prevents overload on your computer or mobile device. And please close all other programs/apps that use your mic/camera.

Please ensure webcam and microphone are connected to your computer or mobile device. Click on the link using the relevant device and browsers mentioned and you will be taken into Riverside where you will be asked to give permission to access the camera and microphone connected.

Depending on the bowser and device, some of the prompts may look like the the images below.

Once the browser permissions have been granted you will be taken into the virtual recording room with Bob. It’s that easy. Once connected, Bob will go over the format of the show and will answer any questions you may have.

You can also send us a message if you have questions, feedback, or need any help from our team.

Thank you for being a guest with us. We look forward to a great conversation about money and the emotions that bind us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate microphone?

We do recommend the use of an external microphone and the use of headphones or earphones. This will prevent any prominant echoes or feedback looping in the recording. Although Riverside does offer an echo cancellation feature, it is not always fool proof.

Do you release audio and video of the podcast?

Yes. We release an audio version which is uploaded to all the various podcast apps and sites. We also release a video version on YouTube and other video based platforms. We will also release clips on our social media channels to promote the episode.

Can we use Zoom Video App to record the epsiode? I am not familiar with Riverside.fm.

Zoom Video App is a video conferencing app. It is not a dedicated audio recording platform tailored to podcasting like Riverside.fm. Many podcasters choose to use Zoom, but we prefer to use Riverside as it is a much higher quality recording.

Riverside.fm provides us with high quality recordings that you can download a separate tracks. Which is ideal for editing. After the recording, a local recording is where the audio and the video are recorded on your device then uploaded to the cloud to be downloaded afterwards.

This is different than an internet recording from Zoom. The audio and video is compressed and only available to download in lower quality. The quality of the internet recording is dependent on the internet connection, and usually the resolution is lower than a local recording. Internet recordings are usually compressed, which further degrades the quality.

Where do I find the link to take me into the recording session?

On the week of your scheduled recording session, (usually 2 days prior) we will contact you via email to confirm your scheduled recording session. We will also provide you with the relevant link to connect with Bob on Riverside.fm. If you require the link to be sent to you earlier, please notify us.
